I was always told a couple of things about respect.

Don’t expect it from anyone unless you’ve earned it.

Don’t give it to anyone unless they’ve earned it.

Always be respectable.

Always be respectful.

Some people might think that the second and fourth rules of respect are at odds with each other. And this is the part they never told me; I was left to figure it out on my own. They aren’t. You don’t have to respect someone to be respectful. You can respectfully decline an invitation; respectfully turn on your heel and leave a conversation; respectfully avoid those whom you don’t respect. It’s not always easy, but that’s the rub. Being a good person isn’t always easy.
